What's the difference between gaffer tape and duct tape?

Gaffer tape has a matte cloth finish that doesn't reflect stage or film lighting, and it peels away cleanly without leaving heavy adhesive residue. Duct tape is glossier, more aggressive and much harder to remove from floors, cases and cables.

Which tape should I use to secure cables to a floor?

Matte gaffer tape in a width of 48mm or wider is the standard choice for taping cable runs on timber, vinyl and carpet. For high-traffic public areas use a proper cable mat or ramp and gaffer the edges.

Are hook & loop straps better than cable ties?

Accepted Answer

For anything you'll unrig again — mic cables, DMX, IEC leads — hook & loop straps are faster and won't crush the jacket. Single-use cable ties suit permanent installs and bundling inside racks.
